The Artist
Josie Hecht is a London based mixed media artist exploring the physicality and sensory experience of memory. Drawing on Marcel Proust’s ideas of sensory memory and studies of materiality, her work explores the integration of the past and present into one physical space, questioning how memories take on a physical presence through our memorialization. Central to her practice is the relationship of the image to memory. Through digital manipulation and experimental printing methods, her photographs are reduced to elements of light, texture and color, mimicking the sensation of the fragile process of recollection. Hecht’s work ultimately examines memory’s relationship to space and time, exploring the tensions between sensation and perception and absence and presence that arise along with the process of recollection.
